Patient must watch a 12-minute video on research versus a "treatment".

Patient must have a pre-coma evaluation by Anthony Kirkpatrick M.D., Ph.D. Patient must sign the CONSENT form for the study prior to the evaluation. During this evaluation, patient will have a video recorded to establish baseline function. Baseline pain thresholds and photos will also be taken.

Patient must undergo baseline cognitive testing by Clinical Psychologist Richard Hoffman, Ph.D. To schedule appointment (Contact - 813-977-2924)

Patient must send medical synopsis and photos to Dr. Kirkpatrick.  This information and videos will be posted on the Foundation’s website. For examples, please go to the following link: 

Medical Synopsis

The synopsis must include a statement about the requirement for the 1, 6, 12 and 24 month follow-up evaluation by Dr. Kirkpatrick in Tampa. Dr. Kirkpatrick and Karen Hahn, Research Associate, will review the synopsis and photos.

Patient MUST send a deposit to cover 3 round-trip flights for two persons from the patient’s place of residence to the International Research Foundation for RSD / CRPS in Tampa, Florida. This deposit will be returned to the research subject at the 1-year follow-up evaluation with Dr. Kirkpatrick.  Checks should be made out to “The International Research Foundation for RSD / CRPS”.

Patient must obtain the required laboratory tests. Abnormal results should be reported to Dr. Kirkpatrick. For more information on the necessary tests, please see:

After all of the preceding requirements are met, Dr. Kirkpatrick will send the informational patient webpage (complete with synopsis and photos) to Fernando Cantu, MD.  Dr. Cantu will review the information presented with Dr. Kirkpatrick and will make the final decision as to whether this patient will be permitted to participate in the 5-day ketamine coma study.

If Dr. Cantu approves the patient, Dr. Kirkpatrick will notify the research subject to contact Dr. Cantu in order to continue with the process. Dr. Cantu will provide instructions on the $50,000 deposit for the study.  The research subject MUST sign the consent form BEFORE they travel to Dr. Cantu's office in Mexico.
